Murphy's Law: Halloween edition

Holy frijoles, I can't believe it's been a month to the day since I last posted.  Getting our house packed up for our upcoming move has taken up nearly all of my free time... and we still don't know precisely where we'll be hanging out the "Cygnus Family" shingle come January.

I got the urge to post because, wouldn't'cha know it, fate picks now for the following.  No more than 36 hours ago, I got the first glimmer of an idea to write a story -- part sci-fi, part sci-fact, part semi-autobio.  I've done short form fiction on the blog before (urp), but with emphasis on the short.  This thing is likely to end up being longer than a typical blog post; it may also blow past the canonical 7,500 word boundary between "short story" and "novelette."

I've already amassed something like 2,000 words on the outline alone.  It won't let me alone.

Ah, we'll see if this momentum continues.  But now, to commemorate the impending night of the rending of the veil between worlds, let me just point you to another story, this one completely wordless, that I think captures the heart of the All Hallows season nicely.  With cute kitties!  :-)

  1. I like your scaredy cats. They're adorable. Moving is very hard work.

    Love,

    1. Thanks, Janie. Turns out the cat story is 2 years old, but I just discovered it the other day.

  2. You're moving AND writing? Sounds impossible.

You are taking that suit of armor to your new digs, right?

    1. The writing ought to go 3rd in the priority list, after moving prep and "regular" work (teaching & research), but it's callin' to me...

Suit of armor? You don't mean the tin man in this post, do you? That's not ours. :-)

    2. I had you confused with Geo (Trainride of the Enigmas)!! He's the one with the suit of armor in his house. I realized my mistake this morning, but then thought that there was a very slight chance that maybe you also possessed a suit of armor. And therefore my odd question would appear amazing.

    3. No worries, and I'm honored to be thought of in the same company as Sir Geo.

  3. I wish you and your family that all things during moving work well (in all my life I moved 16 times - I loved it and for a time even planned to write a self-help-book about it.)
Good that you have an exciting idea for something to write!

    1. 16 times! My history could reach this number only if you count each year of college -- 2 moves, to and from the dorm, each year. But on the scale of getting a whole household moved, maybe each of those tiny "movelets" should count only as 0.1 of an official move. I could use that self-help book right about now... :-)

  4. Daughter and I *love* Scaredy Cat. Thank you soo much for pointing us in its direction. Ms. Franzen is enormously talented and shot a cuddly arrow straight to both our hearts!

As for your story--barreling past short--I'm intrigued. How do you plan to share?

    1. How to share? Maybe I should open that topic for discussion. I have no idea. :-) I'd love a venue with more readers than this blog, but I don't think I'll be up for "shopping it around" anywhere official. I definitely want to keep it free to read on the web, whereever it ends up.

(Also, the more I run the ideas around in my head, the more I worry that it's derivative of another well-known tale... I have to figure out how to accentuate the parts that are unique and "file off the serial numbers" of the parts in common with that other story.) :-) :-)

  5. The cat story is very sweet. Real world, though, they should have been a lot more worried about the owl than the bats!

Good luck with your story. I haven't gone anywhere near the idea of fiction for quite a while now. I envy your inspiration and look forward to learning more.

    1. Thanks, Squid. The last 36 hours haven't been as inspired as the previous 36 hours, but the story is still waltzing around up there, looking for a way out onto the page...
