Good at night

On Day 24 of my accelerated stroll through the 30 Songs in 30 Days challenge, I mentioned an important song for which I couldn't find a good link.  Well, if you can't hear it, you can at least read the lyrics.  (Hmm... it's weird. As I read the words with my eyes, they kind of seem a bit boastful... but that's the complete opposite of the feeling you get when listening.)

Anyway, off John Gorka's 1991 album "Jack's Crows," here's "Good."

I am good at dreams
I am good at dreams
Bad at savings bonds;
Fashion magazines
I am good at dreams
I am good at dreams

I am good at night
I am good at night
Sun don't fit me right
I tried with all my might
I am good at night
I am good at night

I am good at stars
I am good at skies
Not like other guys
I am good at skies
I could close my eyes
I could be your size
I would still be good at skies

I am good at wind
I am good at stone
I am good at rain
Good at all alone
I am good at you
And good at home

I am good at night
I am good at night
Sun don't fit me right
I tried with all my might
I am good at night
I am good at night

I am good at dreams
I am good at dreams
I am good at night
I am good at night.

  1. Awww. I love the lyrics. And now I really, really want to hear the song. I just did my own search and was able to hear a tiny sample at Amazon,
    http://www.amazon.com/Jacks-Crows/dp/B006U642KM
That's also the only place I could find the whole album available to download.
    Thaaaank you for sharing!!!
BTW that is probably my favorite Van Gogh, and it goes perfectly with this song...

    1. Thanks, Michelle. It's a really good album. Someday I should tell the story of how I was first introduced to it. It's another road-trip narrative like my Halley's Comet piece. :-)

  2. Dear Cygnus,
the lyrics are beautiful, I still have to look up the offered link from Grace. Came home deep at night after a pub trip through Berlin with husband and two narrowboat guys - and have seen what Gorka sings of: a beautiful, beautiful starry sky - so blinking and sparkling (it was very cold). I was surprised when one guy used an app from his i-phone to see the constellation of stars above us - so they even look into that thing instead of the sky! Prefer: "I am good at stars
    I am good at skies
    Not like other guys
    I am good at skies
    I could close my eyes"
though I wonder about "I could be your size/ I would still be good at skies".
Thank you for drawing attention to the song + singer! Britta

    1. That sounds like a beautiful night!

The "I could be your size" line is one of the ones that I thought could sound boastful in the wrong context. Sort of like John Lennon's "No one I think is in my tree... it must be high or low." In both cases, the only real fact put forward is "Gosh, I'm different." Whether that's good or bad is left up for debate! :-)

  3. I would like to be good at rain. I am good at sun. Have shed a few tears this week for home.

Beautiful post, my dear friend. I love it.

  4. Thanks. There's still some sun poking through the northern trees and mist, isn't there? It's the same sun.

    1. There is, actually. And you're right.

Sending all good thoughts and hope your way for upcoming events.

  5. I agree with Michelle - nice pairing with the painting. The song reminds me a little of "I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

    1. Starry, starry night... I was lucky to get to see Don McLean sing that live back in the 80s. (In a just world he'd be known for this song and not that other overrated one.) :-)
